“Night Whispers” (CLICK IMAGE TO PURCHASE) is a debut poetry collection by D.B. Frank. Frank’s work tackles family hardships in rural Appalachia, trust, and loss, while finding beauty in nature’s simplicity.
Frank comforts his readers, as if telling us a bedtime story, in “Nightly Slumber”. He states, “The smile of the moon / looks down upon the land / home lights wink on / one by one . . .” Frank honorably tackles the issue of whose land we’re truly on and whether we should give back to the land with poem, “Their Land”. Poem “Hospital Bed”–a bittersweet piece of life and death–is a proper portrayal of a father-son connection, capturing the silent sentiments (and dialogue) of men.
“Night Whispers” is comforting. . . and wise. . . and mellifluous. This collection is the vein of true Appalachian literature. “Night Whispers” is all things that inspire at night, to keep us going in the morning. For a complementary book, I’d suggest reading WV poet Irene McKinney’s “Unthinkable” along with this.
